About the Contractor

Arny Messersmith spent most of his adult life in the Bay Area. After his duty in the Navy, he worked for the City of San Francisco as a surveyor and inspector. His desire to create and express his innovative ideas was over powering and he left the City after 15 years. He loves the outdoors and enjoys kayaking, hiking, swimming, and snow skiing. He has danced most of his life starting when his grandmother took him to her Belgium/Italian dances. As a father he in turn took his twin daughters and son to the local community dances. He has taught ballroom and country dancing for over 10 years in the Bay Area and continues to teach in Grass Valley.

Arny’s artistic talents amaze visitors and friends when they see his work. His use of circular windows, arches, beams, recessed lighted shadow boxes, skylights and textures shows a quality that is not often found. His unusual plans include octagon shaped rooms, overhead walkways, a simplistic grouping of rooms and adaptation of houseboat plans for land homes. He uses unusual and innovative materials such as rain gutters on the interior and aluminum cables for maintenance free railings on decks.

He builds every home as if he will live in it! Arny encourages the client to contribute ideas and even muscle! His homes have been constructed above code requirements and with extra protection against fires. Lighting from windows, skylights and electrical “objects” are his delight. Come on in and look around.
